How to blur a face in a photo

No phone has a built-in face-blur button. Here is what the workarounds do instead, and a tool built for exactly this.

Why there is no built-in button for this

iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac all have quick-editing tools for cropping, filters and markup, but none of them ship a dedicated face-blur or face-pixelate feature. The closest built-in option on most platforms is the general markup pen: draw a solid black or coloured shape over the face, which hides it completely but looks obviously edited and cannot be partially see-through.

Drawing over it with Markup

On an iPhone: open the photo, tap Edit, tap the markup icon (three dots in a circle, or the pen icon), and draw a filled shape over the face with the pen or shape tool. On a Mac, Preview's Markup toolbar (the pen-tip icon) has the same shapes and a fill colour. On Windows, Paint's shape tool with a fill colour does the same job. This works, and is often the fastest option when appearance does not matter, but it is a solid patch, not a blur, and it is easy to place badly on a moving or tilted face.

Why a blur or pixelate is often better than a solid box

A blur or pixelate keeps the photo looking like a real photo rather than a patched one, which matters for a listing, a group photo shared publicly, or a screenshot going into a report. It also degrades gracefully: light blurring still reads as "there was a face here" while heavy blurring makes the identity unrecoverable, which a badly-placed solid box does not guarantee if it slips even slightly.

Blurring or pixelating a face without an app

Stayput's blur faces tool detects faces automatically and lets you blur, pixelate, or black-box each one, with the strength adjustable per face, directly in your browser. It also works on other things worth hiding in a photo (a number plate, a screen, a name tag) using the underlying blur & pixelate tool's manual marking. Nothing is uploaded: the photo and the detection both run on your device.

A quick checklist before posting

Beyond the obvious face, check for: other people's faces in the background, visible screens or documents, licence plates, house numbers, and anything reflective (glasses, windows, chrome) that can show what the camera itself would have caught.

Questions

Does my phone have a face blur feature?

No major phone OS ships one natively. The closest built-in option is drawing a solid shape with the markup or pen tool.

Is pixelating a face reversible?

A strong enough blur or pixelation cannot be reliably reversed to recover the original detail, though light blurring may still leave some identifying features visible; when in doubt, blur more heavily.

Can I blur more than one face in the same photo?

Yes, Stayput's tool detects every face it finds and lets you blur each independently.

Does blurring a face upload the photo anywhere?

Not with a browser-based tool that runs face detection locally. Stayput's runs entirely in your tab, so the photo never leaves your device.
