StayPut for AI assistants

StayPut’s PDF and photo tools also come as an MCP server, so Claude, Cursor, VS Code and other assistants can use them on the files on your computer. Ask “merge the two invoices in Downloads” or “does this photo have my location in it?” and the work happens on your machine.

It runs the same code as this website. Your files are read from disk and written back to disk. Nothing is uploaded, and the server makes no network requests at all. It is free, open source and needs no account or API key.

Install

You need Node.js 20 or newer.

Claude Code

claude mcp add stayput -- npx -y stayput-mcp

Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf

Add this to the app’s MCP settings file (claude_desktop_config.json, .cursor/mcp.json and so on), then restart the app:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "stayput": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "stayput-mcp"]
    }
  }
}

VS Code

code --add-mcp '{"name":"stayput","command":"npx","args":["-y","stayput-mcp"]}'

What it can do

Every tool writes a new file and tells the assistant where it is. Your originals are never changed, and an existing file is never overwritten. Password-protected PDFs are unlocked locally when you give the password.

Why local matters here

Several PDF tools for AI assistants are wrappers around an online service: your contract or bank statement is uploaded to someone else’s server so a model can press a button there. This one never sends a file anywhere, which you can check in the source code.

Not in the server (yet)

HEIC, WebP and AVIF conversion, compression, PDF to image and signing need a browser engine, so they stay on the website: HEIC to JPG, compress PDF, PDF to image and sign PDF all run in your browser the same way.
