Test your microphone
Check that your microphone works before a Zoom, Teams or Discord call: speak and watch the level, then play back five seconds to hear how you sound. Nothing is uploaded.

Tests your microphone with a live level meter, a plain verdict, and a 5-second recording you can play back. It is free, and the sound from your microphone is not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. Your browser asks for microphone permission, and after one visit and a short wait the page works offline.

Test a headset or external microphone
Plug in or pair the headset or USB microphone first, then press Test my microphone and choose it from the Microphone list. The bar and the play-back then show that microphone, not the laptop's own. If it is not in the list, check that it is connected and not muted, then press Stop using the microphone and start again.
Tips for a clean recording
- Keep your mouth about a hand's width from the microphone.
- Keep the peak marker clear of the right end of the bar: a peak at the end means clipping, so turn the input volume down.
- Close other apps that use the microphone, and turn off fans and music that the microphone can hear.
- Happy with the level? Record it with the voice recorder. Still hissy or noisy? Clean the recording with Remove background noise.
Microphone not working? Check these first
- Check the microphone is not muted: many headsets and laptops have a mute key or switch.
- Check that the right microphone is chosen in the list.
- Check that no other app, such as Zoom or Teams, is holding the microphone.
- Check the browser is allowed to use it: on a Mac under System Settings, Privacy and Security, Microphone; on Windows under Settings, Privacy, Microphone.
How it works
- Press Test my microphone and allow it when your browser asks. Choose another microphone from the list if you have several.
- Speak. The bar moves with your voice, and the verdict says whether the level is right, too quiet, clipping or silent.
- Press Record 5 seconds and play back to hear exactly how you sound, then press Stop using the microphone.
In your browser, not on a server
Your browser opens the microphone (getUserMedia) with its own clean-up turned off, and the Web Audio API measures the level of each moment of sound in your tab. The play-back check is recorded by the browser’s built-in recorder into memory and played straight back.
Compared with upload-based tools: Many online mic tests record you and upload the clip to play it back, or run ads and trackers around the test. Here nothing is stored or sent: the sound goes from your microphone to this tab and nowhere else.
Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.
Questions
Is my voice recorded or uploaded?
No. The level is measured by code in this page from the live input, and nothing is recorded unless you press the play-back button. That recording stays in this tab’s memory, is never sent anywhere, and disappears when you close the page.
The bar does not move. What is wrong?
Check the microphone is not muted (many headsets and laptops have a mute key or switch), that the right microphone is chosen in the list, and that no other app such as Zoom or Teams is holding it. On a Mac, allow the browser under System Settings, Privacy and Security, Microphone; on Windows, under Settings, Privacy, Microphone.
What level should I aim for?
When you speak normally, the average should sit around the middle of the bar (about −30 to −15 dB) and the peak marker should stay clear of the right end. A peak at the end means the sound is clipping, which sounds harsh; turn the input volume down.
Why does it sound different in calls?
This test turns off the browser’s noise suppression, echo cancellation and automatic gain, so you hear what the microphone really picks up. Call apps apply their own clean-up, which usually makes voices quieter in the background and more even.
How do I test my microphone on Windows or Mac?
Open this page, press Test my microphone and allow it when your browser asks, then speak: the bar moves and the verdict tells you if the level is right. If the browser has no access, allow it on a Mac under System Settings, Privacy and Security, Microphone, or on Windows under Settings, Privacy, Microphone. The sound is handled inside the page in your tab and is never sent to a server.
How do I test an external or USB microphone?
Connect it first, press Test my microphone, then pick it from the Microphone list and speak into it. If you plug it in after the test has started, press Stop using the microphone and start again. For a headset, also check the headset is the one chosen, not the laptop microphone.
Does the mic test work on a phone?
Try it. Open this page in your phone’s browser, press Test my microphone and allow the microphone when asked. If the bar moves, it works there; if it does not, check the browser’s microphone permission in your phone’s settings.
