Test your webcam
Check that your webcam works before a Zoom, Teams or interview call: see the live picture, the real resolution and the measured frame rate. Nothing is uploaded.
- Nothing is uploaded
- Works offline after first visit
- Open source
- No watermark · limit is your device’s memory; phones hold less
Tests your webcam with a live preview, its real resolution and frame rate, a mirror view and a snapshot. It is free, and the picture from your camera is not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. Your browser asks for camera permission, and after one visit and a short wait the page works offline.
Done
Open the network tab. Your files never appear in it.
Add files and run the tool to see every request this tab makes.
Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.
What this test shows
- The live picture from your camera, so you can check framing and light.
- The resolution the camera really delivers, which can be lower than the box says.
- The frame rate, measured in this page.
- The aspect ratio of the picture.
- A mirror view, to see yourself as in a mirror.
- A snapshot you can save as a JPG.
Webcam not working?
- Check the lens cover or privacy switch. Some laptops also have a camera key on the keyboard.
- Check that no other app, such as Zoom or Teams, is using the camera.
- Check the browser is allowed to use the camera: on a Mac under System Settings, Privacy and Security, Camera; on Windows under Settings, Privacy, Camera.
How it works
- Press Test my webcam and allow the camera when your browser asks. Choose another camera from the list if you have several.
- Check the picture, then read what the camera really delivers: its resolution, aspect ratio and the frame rate measured in this page.
- Take a photo to save a snapshot as JPG, then press Turn off the camera.
In your browser, not on a server
Your browser opens the camera (getUserMedia) and shows it in a video element on this page. The resolution comes from the picture itself, the frame rate is counted from the frames that actually arrive, and a snapshot is drawn to a canvas and saved as JPG by your browser.
Compared with upload-based tools: Many online webcam tests send your picture to their servers to take a photo or record a clip, and run ads and trackers around the test. Here the picture goes from your camera to this tab and nowhere else.
Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.
Questions
Is my picture recorded or uploaded?
No. The camera shows in this page from a local stream, and nothing is recorded or sent anywhere. A snapshot is only made when you press Take a photo, and it goes straight to your downloads.
My camera is not found or shows black. What is wrong?
Check the lens cover or privacy switch, that no other app such as Zoom or Teams is using the camera, and that the browser is allowed to use it: on a Mac under System Settings, Privacy and Security, Camera; on Windows under Settings, Privacy, Camera. Some laptops also have a camera key on the keyboard.
Why is the resolution lower than my camera’s box says?
Browsers ask for 1080p here, and a camera gives the closest mode it has. Many “1080p” webcams only deliver 720p over USB, or drop resolution in apps that request less. Choose 4K under Ask for to see the most your camera offers.
Why is the measured frame rate low?
Webcams slow down in dim light to let in more light per frame, often from 30 to 15 frames per second. Turn on a lamp facing you and test again.
How do I test my webcam on Windows or Mac?
Open this page, press Test my webcam and allow the camera when your browser asks. If the picture stays black, allow the browser on a Mac under System Settings, Privacy and Security, Camera, or on Windows under Settings, Privacy, Camera. The picture, its resolution and the frame rate then show on the page, and the picture stays in this tab.
Can I test my webcam before a Zoom or Teams call?
Yes. Close the call app first, because another app may be using the camera, then press Test my webcam here to check the picture, the light and the frame rate. Turn the camera off on this page before you rejoin the call.
