Is Zamzar safe?
Zamzar is one of the oldest online converters. Its storage window is longer than most, which is the detail worth knowing.
The short answer
Zamzar is legitimate. It is run by Zamzar Limited, a company registered in England, and has been converting files online since 2006. Its privacy policy was last modified on 14 August 2026.
The point to understand before uploading something personal is retention. Free conversions can stay on Zamzar’s systems for up to seven days, noticeably longer than services that delete within hours.
What Zamzar’s policy says
As of October 2026, per Zamzar’s privacy policy, last modified 14 August 2026:
- Free conversions. Files you submit and their converted outputs are stored for no longer than 7 days.
- Accounts. For account holders, data is kept while the account is active; files are permanently removed 35 days after an account is deactivated.
- Email. If you give an email address, Zamzar sends links to download your converted files there.
- Encryption. Traffic to and from its servers uses TLS.
- Analytics. It uses Google Analytics.
- Service providers. Data is shared with vendors for server hosting and content delivery.
What a seven-day window means
A week is a design choice that makes email delivery work: the link has to stay valid until you open it. The consequence is that a copy of your file, and the converted result, may sit on a server for days, reachable by anyone who gets the download link from your inbox.
For a song or a slide deck that is rarely a concern. For an ID scan, payslip or medical letter it is worth avoiding, and some workplaces forbid sending such files to unapproved services at all.
Converting on your own device instead
Stayput’s tools do the most common conversions inside your browser, so your files are not uploaded, there is no copy on a server and no link to expire. Use the image converter for JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and more, Compress image to shrink photos for upload forms, PDF to image to turn pages into JPG or PNG, and Video to MP3 for audio. The result downloads straight from the page.
Zamzar covers many more formats and offers an API and account features. For obscure formats with nothing private inside, it remains a solid choice.
How to tell whether a site uploads
After one visit and a short wait, switch on airplane mode and try a file: server-based tools fail, local ones keep working. Our guide also shows the network-panel check.
