Open ZIP, RAR and 7z files

The files inside an archive, unpacked on your own device, without installing WinRAR or 7-Zip.

Extracts ZIP, RAR, 7z and TAR archives, including password-protected ZIP files, and downloads the files inside. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The size limit is your device’s memory, and phones hold less; give the page a short while after your first run to save itself for offline use, and then it works offline.

    Working…

    Done

Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.

    How it works

    1. Drop a ZIP, RAR, 7z or TAR archive, or several.
    2. If the ZIP is password-protected, type its password.
    3. Press Extract, then download the files you need, or all of them as one ZIP.

In your browser, not on a server

libarchive (BSD-2-Clause), the archive library behind bsdtar, compiled to WebAssembly by libarchive.js (MIT), runs in a background worker in your tab. It detects the format from the file itself, opens password-protected ZIP files when you give the password, and hands back each file. The worker and its WebAssembly, about 1 MB, are served from this site the first time you extract something, then cached. Downloading everything packs the files into one plain ZIP with fflate (MIT), keeping the folders.

Compared with upload-based tools: Online extractors upload the whole archive, including any password you type, to their servers, and many cap the size. Here nothing leaves your device, password-protected ZIPs stay private, and the limit is your device’s memory (phones hold less).

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after your first run to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

Why would I open a RAR here instead of installing WinRAR or 7-Zip?

On a work laptop where you cannot install software, on a Chromebook, or on a phone, this is the quickest way to get at the files. On your own computer a desktop app is a fine choice too; both keep the files local, unlike online extractors that upload the archive.

    Which formats open?

ZIP, RAR (old RAR and RAR5), 7z, TAR and its compressed forms (TAR.GZ, TGZ, TAR.BZ2, TAR.XZ), ISO disc images and CAB. Archives split into parts (.part1.rar, .7z.001) must be joined first and are not supported yet.

    Can it open password-protected archives?

Password-protected ZIP files open after you enter the password: type it before pressing Extract. Encrypted 7z and RAR archives are not supported yet (in our tests they did not open even with the correct password). It cannot guess or remove a password you do not have.

How do I remove the password from a ZIP file?

Open the ZIP here, type its password before pressing Extract, then press Download all as zip. The new ZIP has the same files and no password. You need the password: this page cannot recover a forgotten one, and encrypted 7z and RAR archives are not supported yet.

    Is the archive uploaded?

No. libarchive, the same open-source code behind the tar command on macOS and FreeBSD, runs in this tab as WebAssembly, so the archive and everything in it stay on your device.
