Remove silence from audio

Shorter recordings without the dead air, made on your own device. Interviews and lectures stay private.

Cuts the long pauses out of a podcast, lecture or voice memo (MP3, WAV, M4A and more) and trims quiet starts and ends. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The size limit is your device’s memory, and phones hold less; give the page a short while after your first run to save itself for offline use, and then it works offline.

Drop recordings to take the silence outor click to choose files. Batches welcome.
    Working…

    Done

Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.

    How it works

    1. Drop one or more recordings.
    2. Choose what counts as silence, how long a pause must be before it is shortened, and how much pause to leave.
    3. Run it. The note says how much was taken out; listen through before you publish.

In your browser, not on a server

Your browser’s own audio decoders turn the file into plain samples in your tab. The level is measured in 10 ms windows, using the loudest channel, and every quiet stretch longer than your chosen length is cut down to the pause you chose, with a 5 ms fade at each join. The sound is then written again: MP3 by LAME in WebAssembly, WAV and FLAC by code in this site, M4A and OGG by the browser’s own encoders.

Compared with upload-based tools: Online silence removers upload the recording, cap free files by length or size, and some keep the uploads. Here nothing is uploaded and the limit is your device’s memory (phones hold less), which matters for long lectures and for private interviews.

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after your first run to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

    Is my recording uploaded?

No. The sound is decoded, measured and written again by code in this tab. Lectures, interviews, therapy notes and calls stay on your device.

Which silence setting should I use?

Quiet (−40 dB) suits most recordings made with a headset or a phone held close. If the pauses carry a hum from a fan or traffic and nothing is removed, choose the noisy-room setting. For a studio recording with a very clean background, the near-total silence setting avoids clipping soft word endings.

Will it cut off quiet words or breaths?

Only pauses longer than the length you choose are touched, and the pause left behind is split evenly around the join, so word endings keep their tail. A short fade at each join stops clicks. If soft syllables get clipped, pick the near-total silence setting or leave a longer pause.

    Can it do a video?

Not yet: this page works on sound. Take the sound out of a video with Video to MP3, then remove the silence from that.
