Trim a video

Cut a clip out of a longer video without uploading it. Most cuts take seconds and keep the original quality.

Trims a video to the start and end you pick (MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV) and saves the clip in the same format. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The size limit is your device’s memory, and phones hold less; give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, and then it works offline.

    Details

Left off, the clip is copied without re-encoding: instant and with no quality loss, starting at most half a second early.

    Working…

    Done

Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.

    How it works

    1. Drop a video (MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV), or tap to pick one. It opens in a player on the page.
    2. Play or scrub to where the clip should start and press Set start, then to the end and press Set end. Or type the times in seconds.
    3. Trim. The clip is copied out of the video without re-encoding, so it keeps the original quality and downloads in seconds.

In your browser, not on a server

Your browser plays the video from the file on your device so you can pick the start and end. Mediabunny (MPL-2.0) then reads the MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV container in your tab and copies the packets between those two points into a new file of the same type, starting from the nearest key frame within half a second. When there is none that close, or when you ask for an exact cut, the clip is decoded and re-encoded by your browser’s own video encoder (WebCodecs).

Compared with upload-based tools: Online video cutters upload the whole file just to throw most of it away, cap free videos at a few hundred megabytes and often add a watermark. Here nothing is uploaded, and a clip from a 2 GB recording is cut in seconds because the video is copied rather than re-encoded.

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

    Is my video uploaded?

No. Your browser plays the video from the file on your device, and the clip is cut by code in this page. There is no server and no watermark, and the page works offline after one visit and a short wait.

Why does my clip start a moment early?

Videos are stored as key frames with changes in between, and a clip copied without re-encoding has to start on a key frame. When the nearest one is within half a second before your start, the clip begins there. Tick "Cut exactly on the frame" to re-encode the clip and start exactly where you set it.

    Does trimming lower the quality?

Not by default: the video and sound between your start and end are copied as they are. An exact cut re-encodes the clip at high quality, which is close but not identical to the original.

What format is the trimmed clip?

The same as the video you dropped: an MP4 stays an MP4, a MOV stays a MOV, and WebM and MKV stay WebM and MKV. To get an MP4 from any of them, use Video to MP4 afterwards.
