Record your voice
A voice memo, a voice-over or a quick demo, recorded in this tab and saved as MP3. The sound never leaves your device.
- Nothing is uploaded
- Works offline after first use
- Open source
- No watermark · limit is your device’s memory; phones hold less
Records your voice with your microphone and saves it as MP3, WAV or M4A. It is free, and your recordings are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. Recordings are built in your device’s memory, so how long you can record depends on the device. After your first run the page works offline.
Done
Open the network tab. Your files never appear in it.
Add files and run the tool to see every request this tab makes.
Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.
How it works
- Press Start recording and allow the microphone when your browser asks. Choose another microphone from the list if you have more than one.
- Speak. The meter shows the level; pause and resume as often as you like.
- Press Stop and save. Listen back on the page and download the recording as MP3, WAV or M4A.
In your browser, not on a server
Your browser records the microphone with its built-in recorder (MediaRecorder), with its own noise and echo reduction if you leave it on. When you stop, the sound is decoded and written in your tab: MP3 by LAME compiled to WebAssembly, WAV by a few lines of code, or M4A by the browser’s AAC encoder.
Compared with upload-based tools: Online voice recorders upload the recording to their servers to convert it, show ads around the download, and some keep your recordings in an account. Voice memos, interviews and dictation are private. Here the sound never leaves your device.
Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after your first run to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.
Questions
Is my recording uploaded?
No. The microphone is recorded by your browser in this tab, and the MP3 is written by code in this page. There is no account and no server, so nobody else can hear it, and the page works offline after your first run.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes, in Safari on iPhone and iPad and in Chrome on Android. Keep the screen on while recording: phones pause web pages when the screen locks.
Why does my voice sound muffled or quiet?
Noise and echo reduction is on by default, which suits calls and memos. For music or a clean voice-over with a good microphone, untick "Reduce background noise and echo" to record the raw sound, then use the volume booster if it is too quiet.
Is there a time limit?
No. The recording is held in memory until you save it; an hour of speech is only a few tens of megabytes. Saving a very long recording as MP3 takes a little while, and WAV is fastest.
Can I turn the recording into text?
Yes. Save it, then drop the file on Audio to text: a speech model running in your browser writes it out, and the recording is not uploaded.
