    Some upload forms, profile pages and print services accept only JPG, and a GIF is turned away even when it is a still picture. Converting gives you a JPG of the same image. Your browser decodes the GIF in this tab and encodes the JPG at the quality you choose.

    JPG has no transparency, so transparent parts of the GIF are filled with the background colour in the options. An animated GIF becomes a JPG of its first frame. For logos and graphics with flat colour, the GIF to PNG page gives a sharper result; JPG is best when the GIF is really a photo.

    In your browser, not on a server

    Stayput first reads the opening bytes of each file, where every image format writes its signature, so it knows what the file really is whatever it is called. Your browser decodes JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF and SVG itself; HEIC goes through the libheif WebAssembly decoder, and JPEG XL (or AVIF, in a browser without native support) through the Squoosh decoders, all served from this site and cached. The browser re-encodes JPG, PNG and WebP; PDF, ICO, GIF, BMP and TIFF files are written by small encoders in the page. Nothing here needs a server.

    Compared with upload-based tools: Online converters upload your image, convert it on their machine, keep it for hours and cap you at a few files a day. This does the same conversion on your device, for as many files as you like, in less time than the upload.

    Verify it yourself. Load this page, turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode, and run the tool. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

    What happens to an animated GIF?

    The JPG shows the first frame. JPG cannot hold animation, and this page does not export every frame.

    Why does my graphic look slightly blurry?

    JPG compression is designed for photos and softens sharp edges and flat colour. Raise the quality slider to 95 or 100, or convert to PNG instead.

    Can I convert several GIFs at once?

    Yes. Drop them all and download each JPG or one zip.

    Are the files uploaded?

    No. There is no server in this process; the conversion runs in your browser tab.
