PNG is the right format for screenshots, logos and anything with sharp edges or transparency, but for photos and web uploads it is often ten times larger than it needs to be. Converting to JPG trades a little precision for a much smaller file, which is usually the right trade for a photo you are about to email or post.
JPG cannot store transparency, so you choose what colour fills the transparent areas. White is the default; pick the background colour of wherever the image will sit for a seamless result. The quality slider at 90 is visually identical to the original for photos; 75 to 80 is a good choice for web use.

In your browser, not on a server
Your browser already knows how to decode JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and SVG. Stayput draws each image onto an off-screen canvas and asks the browser to encode it again in the format you picked. HEIC input goes through the libheif WebAssembly decoder, and JPEG XL (or AVIF, in a browser without native support) through the Squoosh decoders compiled to WebAssembly, fetched once as program files and cached. Nothing here needs a server because nothing here is beyond what a browser can do on its own.
Compared with upload-based tools: Online converters upload your image, convert it on their machine and hand it back through an ad-covered download page. This does the same conversion with the same codecs, on your device, in less time than the upload.
Verify it yourself. Load this page, turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode, and run the tool. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.
Questions
What happens to transparent parts of the PNG?
They are filled with the background colour you choose in the options. JPG has no transparency, so this step is unavoidable in any converter.
Should I convert a screenshot to JPG?
Usually not. Text and thin lines pick up visible artefacts in JPG. Keep screenshots as PNG, or use the compress tool to shrink the PNG losslessly. Convert to JPG when the image is a photo.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The conversion is done by your browser’s own image encoder on your device. Check the network panel: no request carries your image.
