How to flatten a PDF

A form you just filled in, or a document you just signed, stays editable until it is flattened. Here is what that means, and how to do it for free.

What flattening actually changes

A filled-in form field, a typed comment, a stamp or a drawn signature in a PDF usually stays as a separate, still-editable layer on top of the page, the way a sticky note sits on a document rather than being part of it. Flattening presses that layer permanently into the page itself, so it displays identically everywhere and can no longer be edited, moved or deleted, only viewed as part of the page content from then on.

Why it matters before sending a document

A form field or signature that has not been flattened can, depending on the PDF viewer, still be clicked into and changed by whoever receives the file, which is not what you want for a signed contract or a completed application. Flattening turns those interactive elements into plain, fixed page content before it goes out.

In Adobe Acrobat

Acrobat Pro has a Flatten option, usually reached through Print to PDF or a dedicated menu action depending on the version, which does the job well but needs a paid subscription; the free Acrobat Reader does not offer it.

Flattening without uploading the document

Stayput's flatten PDF tool presses filled form fields, comments, stamps and signatures into the page directly in the browser tab, so the result looks the same in any viewer and cannot be edited back out. The underlying text elsewhere in the document stays selectable; only the interactive elements are locked in, and the file is never uploaded to do it.

Questions

What does flattening a PDF actually do?

It presses interactive elements like filled form fields, comments and signatures permanently into the page, so they display the same everywhere and can no longer be edited or moved.

Why would I flatten a PDF before sending it?

An unflattened form field or signature can sometimes still be edited by whoever opens the file, depending on their PDF viewer; flattening locks it in as fixed page content first.

Does flattening make the rest of the text uneditable too?

No, flattening specifically affects interactive elements like form fields and annotations; ordinary text in the document is unaffected and stays as it was.

Can I flatten a PDF for free without uploading it?

Yes, Stayput's flatten PDF tool works on the document in your browser tab and never sends it to a server.
