Fill in a PDF form

Tax forms, applications and contracts carry your most personal details. Fill them in here and the file never leaves this device.

Lets you type into the fields of a fillable PDF form, tick its boxes and pick from its lists, then saves the filled PDF. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The size limit is your device’s memory, and phones hold less; give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, and then it works offline.

    Working…

    Done

Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.

    How it works

    1. Drop a PDF form. Each page appears with its fields shaded, ready to type into.
    2. Click a box and type, tick the check boxes, and choose from the drop-down lists. Tab moves to the next field.
    3. Save the filled PDF. Tick Lock the answers first if the form should not be edited again.

In your browser, not on a server

pdf-lib reads the form’s fields (AcroForm) and where each one sits on the page, and pdf.js draws every page in your tab with the fields left off. The fields are laid over the pages as ordinary inputs. When you save, pdf-lib writes your answers into the same fields, draws their appearance with the standard Helvetica font, and, if you ask, flattens them into the page.

Compared with upload-based tools: Online form fillers upload the whole form, answers included, and many keep it on their servers or put the download behind an account. Here the form and everything you type into it stay on your device.

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

    Is my form uploaded anywhere?

No. The PDF is opened, drawn and filled by code running in this tab, and the filled copy is saved straight to your device. Forms often hold your name, address, date of birth, and tax or ID numbers, which is exactly what should not go to a stranger’s server.

Why are there no boxes to type into?

The PDF has no fillable fields: it was saved as a flat page, or scanned. Use Sign PDF instead, which lets you type text, add the date and sign anywhere on the page.

What does “Lock the answers” do?

It flattens the form: the answers are drawn onto the page and the fields are removed, so the PDF looks the same everywhere and nobody can change what you typed. Leave it unticked if you or someone else still needs to edit the form.

Can I sign the form here?

Signature fields are shown but not filled here. Save the filled form, then open it in Sign PDF to draw or type your signature on the line.

Does it work with tax forms like the IRS W-9 or W-4?

Yes, the official IRS PDFs are ordinary fillable forms. A few government forms are built with an older Adobe technology (XFA) that only Adobe Reader can fill; for those the page says the PDF has no fillable fields.
