How to record your screen

A quick screen recording for a bug report, a tutorial or a demo does not need a downloaded app. Here is how to record it straight from your browser, free.

Built into Windows and macOS

Windows has the Xbox Game Bar (Win+G) for recording a single app window, though it cannot record the desktop or File Explorer. macOS has Screenshot (Shift+Cmd+5), which records the whole screen, a window, or a selected area, with audio, and needs no extra app. Both are solid for a quick local recording saved straight to disk.

Downloaded recording apps

OBS Studio is free, open-source and does everything a screen recorder needs, plus live streaming, but it has a real learning curve for a one-off recording: scenes, sources and audio mixing are more setup than most quick tutorials need. Loom and Camtasia are easier to start with but gate features like unlimited length or removing a watermark behind a paid plan.

Recording in the browser

Stayput's screen recorder uses the browser's own screen-sharing permission to capture your whole screen, one window, or a browser tab, and can record its audio plus your microphone at the same time for a narrated walkthrough. The video is written to a file directly in the tab as you record, with no length cap beyond your device's storage, no watermark, and no account, since nothing is uploaded to a server to make the recording.

Questions

Can I record my screen without installing anything?

Yes, a browser-based recorder like Stayput's uses the browser's built-in screen-sharing permission, so there is nothing to download or install.

Can I record my microphone along with the screen?

Yes, Stayput's screen recorder with audio option captures your microphone alongside the screen and its own sound for a narrated recording.

Is there a time limit on free screen recording?

Not with a browser-based tool like Stayput's: since nothing is uploaded or processed on a server, the limit is how much memory and storage your device has for the resulting file, and phones have less.

Does a browser screen recorder add a watermark?

No. Watermarks on free screen recorders are usually there to push a paid upgrade for hosted, server-processed recordings; a tool that just captures locally in the browser has no such tier to gate.
