How to remove audio from a video
The mute button on your phone only silences playback. Removing the audio for good needs an actual edit. Here is how, on each platform.
Muting playback vs. removing the audio track
Turning your phone's ringer switch to silent, or tapping mute in a video player, only stops sound on that one playback. The audio track is still inside the file, and it plays normally for anyone else who opens it. Removing the audio for good means re-saving the file without that track, which is a real edit, not a playback setting.
On an iPhone or iPad
The Shortcuts app has a built-in Remove Audio from Video action: open Shortcuts, create a new shortcut, add Select Photos followed by Remove Audio from Video, then run it on your clip and save. It requires no other software and produces a silent copy of the video in Photos.
On Android
There is no one-tap native option. Google Photos' editor does not include a way to drop the audio track entirely, so muting a video for good on Android needs a third-party app or a browser tool.
On Windows
In Clipchamp (preinstalled on Windows 11), select the clip on the timeline and use the volume control in its properties to set it to 0%, then export; this writes the video with silent audio rather than truly removing the track, but the result is a video that never plays sound.
On a Mac
QuickTime Player can strip the audio directly: open the video, choose Edit, Remove Audio from the menu bar (it appears when the file has an audio track), then File, Export As, to save the silent version.
Removing it in one step, on your phone or computer
Stayput's mute video tool drops the audio track entirely in your browser tab, on your phone or computer, without an app to install. The Remove audio from video preset is the same tool set up for this exact job. The file is processed locally, so nothing is uploaded.
Questions
Does muting my phone remove the sound from a video permanently?
No. Muting only silences what you hear while watching; the audio track stays in the file for anyone else who opens it.
Will removing audio make the video file smaller?
Yes, though usually only slightly, since audio is a small part of a video's total size compared to the picture.
Can I remove audio from just part of a video?
Removing the whole track is the simplest edit and what all the options above do. To silence only part of a clip, trim out that section first, or edit in an app that supports separate audio and video timelines.
Does removing the audio track lose video quality?
No. The video frames are untouched; only the separate audio stream is dropped.
