Convert PNG to Word
Turn PNG screenshots and scans into an editable Word document, one page per image, without uploading them.
- Nothing is uploaded
- Works offline after first use
- Open source
- No watermark · limit is your device’s memory; phones hold less
Convert PNG images and screenshots to an editable Word document (.docx) in your browser. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The first run downloads the text reader (about 6 MB) and the WebAssembly engine that runs it to your browser, and after that the tool works offline.

Free, no ads. Support StayPut
Open the network tab. Your files never appear in it.
Add files and run the tool to see every request this tab makes.
Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.
Drop PNG images of printed text and this page reads them with OCR, then gives you one Word document (.docx) with each image on its own page. The reading runs in your browser tab with Tesseract, so the pictures are not uploaded, there is no account and no daily limit.
Only the text comes across. Layout, columns, tables, fonts, colours and pictures are not kept: you get the words as plain, editable paragraphs, which is what you need to edit, quote or reuse them. PNG screenshots are lossless, so they usually read better than photos of a page.
A preview of the recognised text of each image appears before you open the file, so you can see what the reader made of it. Check numbers and names against the original, since OCR can swap look-alike characters such as O and 0.
How it works
- Drop one or more PNG files, or tap to pick them.
- Keep line breaks as in the image, or join them into paragraphs.
- Convert to Word. Preview the text, then open the .docx in Word, Pages or Google Docs.
In your browser, not on a server
Your browser decodes each image (libheif or the Squoosh decoders step in for HEIC, AVIF and JPEG XL), enlarges small screenshots so letters are big enough to read, and hands the pixels to Tesseract, the open-source OCR engine, compiled to WebAssembly by tesseract.js (Apache-2.0). The recognised lines are grouped into paragraphs and written into a .docx, a zip of Word XML parts, by a small writer built on fflate (MIT) in the same tab, with each image starting on a new page. Only the text is kept; layout, tables, fonts and pictures are not.
Compared with upload-based tools: Online image to Word converters upload the picture to a server, and the images people convert are letters, forms and statements. Here the image never leaves your device, and after your first run the page keeps working with Wi-Fi off.
Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after your first run to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.
Questions
Will the Word file look like my PNG?
No. Only the text is kept. Layout, tables, fonts and images are not carried over; the document holds the recognised words as editable paragraphs, one page per image. For an exact copy of a page, use Image to PDF instead.
Can I put several PNG files in one Word document?
Yes. Drop them all and the text of each is added in the order listed, each starting on a new page.
What if the text comes out wrong?
Photos that are blurry, tilted, handwritten or heavily shadowed read poorly. Retake the photo flat and in daylight, or scan at 300 dpi, and try again. The tool reads English.
Is the file uploaded anywhere?
No. There is no server in this process. The page is a static file and the work is done by code running inside your browser tab. Give the page a short while after your first run to save itself for offline use; then you can turn off Wi-Fi and it still works.
