Resize a PNG
Set a maximum width or height, or a percentage, and your PNGs are resized on this device and saved as PNGs.
- Nothing is uploaded
- Works offline after first visit
- Open source
- No watermark · limit is your device’s memory; phones hold less
Resizes PNG images to a maximum width and height, or by a percentage, and saves each one as a PNG. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: the resizing is done by code in this tab. After one visit and a short wait the page works offline.
Done
Open the network tab. Your files never appear in it.
Add files and run the tool to see every request this tab makes.
Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.
Worked example. A screenshot is saved as a PNG that is 4000 pixels wide and 3000 tall, and the form you are filling in wants it no wider than 1920. Leave the page on Limit dimensions with 1920 for width and height, drop the file and press Resize PNG. The shape is kept, so 4000 by 3000 comes out as 1920 by 1440, and the result shows those two numbers.
The file stays a PNG, and transparent areas stay transparent. The page draws the picture onto a transparent canvas; a white background is added only if you choose JPG as the output, because JPG cannot hold transparency.
Limit dimensions leaves the shape alone and leaves a picture that is already inside the limit at its own size: a 600 by 400 PNG with the limit at 1920 comes out 600 by 400. Percentage keeps the shape too: 50% turns 4000 by 3000 into 2000 by 1500. Exact size draws the picture at the width and height you type and, when the shape differs, crops the centre, fits it inside with bars, or stretches it, as you choose.
A PNG has no quality setting, so the saving comes only from having fewer pixels. A PNG of a photograph stays much heavier than the same photograph as a JPG. If you need a small file for a form, tick Fit a file size and the page keeps shrinking the picture until it is under your limit.
For JPG or WebP output, use Compress image. For other image types, Resize image takes JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC.
How it works
- Drop one or more PNG files, or tap to pick them.
- Set a maximum width and height in pixels, or switch to a percentage or an exact size.
- Press Resize PNG. Download each file, or all of them as a zip.
In your browser, not on a server
Resizing uses stepped downscaling on a canvas so text and edges stay sharp, and the browser encodes the result at the quality you choose. Everything happens in memory in your tab. Large batches are processed one image at a time so the page stays responsive on a phone.
Compared with upload-based tools: Image compressors that upload your photos limit you to a few files, a small size, or a watermark until you pay. This one has no counter to reset because there is no server to keep one.
Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.
Questions
How do I resize a PNG?
Drop the PNG on this page, type the largest width and height you want, and press Resize PNG. The picture is scaled to fit inside those numbers with its shape kept, and you download a PNG. Several files can go at once and come back as a zip.
Does resizing a PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. A PNG saved from this page keeps its transparent areas. If you switch the output to JPG, the transparent areas are filled with white, because JPG has no transparency.
Does this page add pixels to a small PNG?
Not in Limit dimensions or Percentage: they only make a picture smaller or leave it as it is, and a PNG already inside the limit keeps its size. If you type an Exact size that is bigger than the picture, it is drawn at that size and looks soft, because no detail is added. This page is for making PNGs smaller.
How do I resize a PNG to an exact size like 512 by 512?
Switch Resize to Exact size and type both numbers. If your picture has a different shape, choose what happens: crop the centre so there are no bars, fit it inside with bars, or stretch it to fit.
Why is my PNG still a big file after resizing?
A PNG stores every pixel exactly and has no quality setting, so a photograph saved as PNG stays large even at a smaller size. For a smaller file, tick Fit a file size, which shrinks the picture until it fits, or choose JPG or WebP as the output format.
Does resizing make a PNG look worse?
It has fewer pixels, so it has less detail, which is the point of making it smaller. The picture is scaled in steps of at most half, so edges and text stay clean instead of going jagged. Saving as PNG loses nothing further.
Is the file uploaded anywhere?
No. There is no server in this process. The page is a static file and the work is done by code running inside your browser tab. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use; then you can turn off Wi-Fi and it still works.
