Convert HEIF to PNG

Turn a .heif photo into a lossless PNG that opens in any editor, at the same pixel size, without uploading it.

Convert .heif and .heic files to lossless PNG in your browser, one file or a whole folder, at the original pixel size. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The size limit is your device’s memory, and phones hold less; give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, and then it works offline.

Drop HEIF files hereor click to choose files. Batches welcome.

A file ending in .heif is a photo stored in the HEIF container, the same family as the .heic files iPhones write. You meet the .heif extension on Android phones and cameras that shoot in HEIF, and in folders exported from a Mac or a photo app. Windows shows no thumbnail for them until Microsoft’s HEIF image extension is installed, and most editors, forms and websites refuse them. A PNG opens everywhere. For files that end in .heic, the HEIC to PNG converter does the same job, and if a smaller file will do, the HEIF to JPG converter is the one to use.

Choose PNG when you want the picture kept exactly as decoded: nothing is lost in the save, so you can open it, edit it and save it again without it getting a little worse each time. Each file is decoded by libheif, compiled to WebAssembly and running in this tab, and the PNG has the same width and height as the photo. If the picture has transparency, as some HEIF images made from cut-outs do, the PNG keeps it.

PNG is far larger than HEIF. Expect five to ten times the size: a 2 MB photo of 4032 × 3024 pixels usually becomes a PNG of 15 to 25 MB. That is the price of storing every pixel without loss. If the file has to fit an upload limit, convert to JPG instead, or run the PNG through Compress PNG afterwards.

    How it works

    1. Drop your HEIF files onto the page, or tap to pick them. Batches are fine.
    2. There are no quality settings: PNG is lossless, so the output matches the decoded image exactly.
    3. Download each PNG, or all of them as one zip.

In your browser, not on a server

Stayput first reads the opening bytes of each file, where every image format writes its signature, so it knows what the file really is whatever it is called. Your browser decodes JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF and SVG itself; TIFF goes through UTIF.js, HEIC through the libheif WebAssembly decoder, and JPEG XL (or AVIF, in a browser without native support) through the Squoosh decoders, all served from this site and cached. The browser re-encodes JPG, PNG and WebP; PDF, ICO, GIF, BMP and TIFF files are written by small encoders in the page. Nothing here needs a server.

Compared with upload-based tools: Online converters upload your image, convert it on their machine, keep it for hours and cap you at a few files a day. This does the same conversion on your device, for as many files as your device’s memory can hold, with no upload to wait for.

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

Is a .heif file the same as a .heic file?

They are the same kind of photo. HEIF is the container format and HEIC is the name Apple’s devices give it, so .heif and .heic files are converted the same way. This page accepts both.

Does the PNG have the same pixel size as the HEIF?

Yes. The photo is decoded at full size and written out without resizing, so a 4032 × 3024 photo gives a 4032 × 3024 PNG. Nothing is cropped or scaled.

Why is my PNG so much bigger than the HEIF?

HEIF compresses with lossy video-style coding, while PNG stores every pixel exactly. The same photo is routinely five to ten times larger as a PNG. For a photo you only need to share, the HEIF to JPG converter gives a much smaller file.

Does the PNG keep the date and location?

No. PNG has no standard place for camera metadata, and browsers do not write it, so the date, camera and GPS position stay behind in the HEIF. That is what you want before posting a picture online.

Can I convert a whole folder of .heif files?

Yes. Drop them all and each is converted one after another, then they download one by one or as one zip. The limit is your device’s memory, so split a very large batch on a phone into groups.

    Are my photos uploaded?

No. The files are read from your disk, decoded and written back by code running in this tab. There is no server in the process, so an album of family photos is never copied anywhere.
