Convert JPG to GIF

Make a GIF from any JPG for the forms, forums and old programs that insist on GIF, without uploading it.

Convert JPG photos and images to GIF in your browser for sites and apps that only accept GIF. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The size limit is your device’s memory, and phones hold less; give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, and then it works offline.

    Working…

    Done

Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.

The usual reason to turn a JPG into a GIF is a gatekeeper: a forum avatar field, a legacy intranet, an e-learning or quiz builder, a CAD, embroidery or label program, or an old email template that accepts GIF and nothing else. The photo is fine; the software is from another decade.

JPG is built for photographs and can show millions of colours. GIF can hold 256. The converter picks the 256 colours that best cover your photo and maps every pixel to the nearest one, without dithering, so faces, skin, sky and shadows can show visible steps or blotches. Screenshots, scanned documents, diagrams and logos saved as JPG convert far more cleanly, because they use few colours to begin with.

GIF is lossless within its palette, so the file often ends up bigger than the JPG for a detailed photo, sometimes two or three times bigger. If the destination has a size limit, shrink the picture first with Resize image. A JPG has no transparency, so neither does the GIF: white stays white.

Camera and phone JPGs carry EXIF data such as the date, camera model and often GPS location. GIF has no place for it, so the GIF you download carries none of it. The rotation stored in the JPG is applied first, so the GIF comes out the right way up.

    How it works

    1. Drop your JPG files onto the page, or tap to pick them. Animated or still, batches are fine.
    2. Nothing to set: animations keep every frame, their timing and their loop, and still images become a single-frame GIF.
    3. Download each GIF, or all of them as one zip.

In your browser, not on a server

Stayput first reads the opening bytes of each file, where every image format writes its signature, so it knows what the file really is whatever it is called. Your browser decodes JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF and SVG itself; TIFF goes through UTIF.js, HEIC through the libheif WebAssembly decoder, and JPEG XL (or AVIF, in a browser without native support) through the Squoosh decoders, all served from this site and cached. The browser re-encodes JPG, PNG and WebP; PDF, ICO, GIF, BMP and TIFF files are written by small encoders in the page. Nothing here needs a server.

Compared with upload-based tools: Online converters upload your image, convert it on their machine, keep it for hours and cap you at a few files a day. This does the same conversion on your device, for as many files as your device’s memory can hold, with no upload to wait for.

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

Can I make an animated GIF from several JPGs?

Not here. Each JPG becomes a single-frame GIF. To animate, put the photos into a short video (most phone gallery apps can) and turn it into a GIF on the Video to GIF page.

Why does my photo look worse as a GIF?

GIF is limited to 256 colours, and photos use many more. Gradients and skin tones show banding. It is a limit of the GIF format, not of this converter; keep the JPG wherever it is accepted.

Why is the GIF bigger than the JPG?

JPG compresses photos by discarding detail the eye barely notices. GIF compresses without discarding anything, which works well for flat graphics but poorly for photos. Resize the image first if you need a smaller GIF.

    Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. It is decoded and re-encoded as a GIF inside this tab, so private photos and scanned documents never leave your device.
