Add text to an image

Write on a photo, a screenshot or a meme and drag the words where you want them. Done on this device, never uploaded.

Puts text on a photo, with the font, colour, outline or box you choose, and saves the image at full size. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The size limit is your device’s memory, and phones hold less; give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, and then it works offline.

    Working…

    Done

Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.

    How it works

    1. Drop a photo or screenshot (JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and more), or several to caption them all the same way.
    2. Type your text, then drag it on the preview to place it. Pick a font, colour, size and an outline, shadow or box so it reads on any background. Add a second text for a caption at the other end.
    3. Save. The text is drawn onto the full-size image; one file downloads straight away, several as a zip.

In your browser, not on a server

Your browser decodes each image (libheif or the Squoosh decoders step in for HEIC, AVIF and JPEG XL) and draws it on a canvas in your tab at full size. Your text is wrapped to fit, then drawn with the canvas text functions at a size that is a share of the image, with an outline, shadow or backing box if chosen, and the result is encoded once in the format you picked. Fonts come from your device, apart from the site’s own Archivo and Caveat.

Compared with upload-based tools: Online text and meme tools upload the picture, many stamp their own watermark on the free version, and some keep the uploads to show in a public gallery. Here the image never leaves your device and the file you save carries no mark but yours.

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

    Is my photo uploaded?

No. Your browser decodes the image, draws your text onto it on a canvas in the page, and saves the result. Your files are not uploaded, and it works offline after one visit and a short wait.

Does the text stay sharp on a big photo?

Yes. The preview is scaled down to fit your screen, but the saved file is drawn at the photo’s full size, and the text size is a share of the photo, so it looks the same as the preview.

Can I add the same text to many images?

Yes. Drop them all at once and the text goes in the same place on each, which is how to caption a set of photos. For a repeated or tiled name across photos, use the watermark tool. The preview shows the first image.

How do I make text readable on a busy photo?

Use Outline for bold meme-style letters, Shadow for a softer look, or Box to put the text on a dark or light panel. White with an outline reads on almost anything.

Can I edit the text later?

Not in the saved image: the text becomes part of the picture. Keep your original, which is never changed, and run it again with new text.

Can I add text to an animated GIF?

This page is for still pictures. For an animated GIF, use Add text to GIF, which draws the same text on every frame and keeps the timing.
