Convert EPUB to PDF

A DRM-free ebook turned into a paginated PDF, laid out on your own device.

Converts an EPUB ebook to a PDF with chapters on new pages, pictures and a contents page. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The size limit is your device’s memory, and phones hold less; give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, and then it works offline.

    Details

Only DRM-free books can be converted: ones from Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, Humble Bundle, many publishers and authors. Books locked with DRM, as most bought from Kobo, Apple Books or Google Play are, cannot be read.

    Working…

    Done

Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.

    How it works

    1. Drop one or more DRM-free EPUB files, from Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, a Humble Bundle or a publisher that sells without DRM.
    2. Pick a page size (A5 reads like a paperback; A4 or Letter for printing at home) and a text size.
    3. Press Convert to PDF. Each chapter starts on a new page, with page numbers and a contents page.

In your browser, not on a server

An EPUB is a zip file. fflate (MIT) unzips it in your tab and the browser’s own parser reads the package file for the reading order, title and author, then each chapter’s XHTML. Headings, paragraphs with their bold and italic runs, lists, quotations and pictures are turned into a document description, and pdfmake (MIT, built on PDFKit) sets it in the Roboto font (Apache-2.0), breaking lines and pages in a background worker. Each chapter starts on a new page, and the first heading of each goes into the contents page.

Compared with upload-based tools: Online EPUB converters upload the whole book, many queue it on a server and some email you a download link. Here the book stays on your device, the size limit is your device’s memory (phones hold less), and it works offline after one visit and a short wait.

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

Will the PDF look like the book in my e-reader?

The structure carries over: chapters, headings, paragraphs, italics and bold, lists, quotations and pictures. The book’s own fonts and fine styling do not: the text is set in Roboto, justified, at the size you pick. Tables come out as plain paragraphs and footnote links as ordinary text.

Why does it say my book is protected by DRM?

Books bought from stores that lock them (with Adobe DRM, for example) have their chapters encrypted, so no converter can read them without the store’s key. Removing DRM is illegal in many countries, and this tool does not try. Books from Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, Tor, Humble Bundle and many small publishers are DRM-free and work.

    Which languages work?

Books in Latin, Greek and Cyrillic letters, which covers English and most European languages. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai and Indian scripts cannot be shown by the built-in font yet, and the tool says so instead of making a PDF of empty boxes.

    Is my book uploaded?

No. The EPUB is unzipped and laid out in this tab, so your library, including books you wrote or were sent in confidence, never leaves your device.
