Convert PDF to EPUB

A PDF made for paper turned into an ebook that reflows on a small screen, on your own device.

Converts a PDF into an EPUB ebook whose text reflows to fit a phone or e-reader screen, with chapters and a table of contents. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The size limit is your device’s memory, and phones hold less; give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, and then it works offline.

Drop PDFs to turn into ebooksor click to choose files. Batches welcome.

E-readers use it for hyphenation, dictionaries and read-aloud voices.

    Working…

    Done

Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.

    How it works

    1. Drop one or more PDFs with real text in them: a report, a novel exported from a writing app, a long article saved as PDF.
    2. Pick the language of the text, so the e-reader hyphenates and looks words up correctly.
    3. Press Convert to EPUB and open the book in Apple Books, Google Play Books, a Kobo, or send it to a Kindle.

In your browser, not on a server

pdf.js (Apache-2.0) reads the positioned text of every page in your tab. The same rebuilding as PDF to Word groups it into lines and paragraphs and spots headings by their size. Text that sits at the top or bottom of many pages and differs only in its numbers is treated as a running header or footer and dropped, bare page numbers too, and a paragraph that stops mid-sentence at a page break is joined to its continuation. The main headings start chapters. Each chapter is written as XHTML with a small stylesheet, with an EPUB 3 navigation file and an NCX contents list for older readers, and fflate (MIT) zips them with the uncompressed mimetype first, as the EPUB specification requires.

Compared with upload-based tools: Online converters upload the PDF and often queue it on a server; some email you the result. Here the PDF stays on your device and the book is ready in seconds.

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

    What survives the conversion?

The text, paragraph by paragraph, and the headings, which become chapters and the table of contents. Page headers, footers and page numbers are removed, and paragraphs split by a page break are joined. Pictures, tables, columns of numbers and footnote layout do not carry over: an EPUB made from a PDF is for reading the words.

Why convert at all instead of reading the PDF?

A PDF has fixed pages, so on a 6-inch e-reader or a phone the text is tiny or you pan around each page. An EPUB reflows: the reader picks the font size and the lines rewrap to fit the screen.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Not directly, because a scan has no text, only pictures of pages. Run it through OCR PDF first to add a text layer, then convert that copy here.

    Is my PDF uploaded?

No. pdf.js reads the text in this tab and the EPUB is zipped here too, so a manuscript or a confidential report stays on your device.
