Online metronome

A steady click at any tempo, with the bar, the subdivisions and tap tempo, running on your device.

Plays a steady metronome from 20 to 300 BPM, in any time signature, with subdivisions and tap tempo. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. After one visit and a short wait the page works offline.

    How it works

    1. Set the tempo with the slider, the minus and plus buttons, or by tapping Tap tempo along with a song.
    2. Choose the beats per bar (4 for most pop and rock, 3 for a waltz, 6 for a 6/8 jig) and whether to click the eighths, triplets or sixteenths too.
    3. Press Start or the space bar. The lights show where you are in the bar, and the first beat is accented.

In your browser, not on a server

A Web Audio oscillator makes each click, shaped by a gain envelope a few milliseconds long. Every 25 ms the page schedules the clicks due in the next 120 ms at exact times on the audio clock, which is driven by your sound card rather than the page’s timers, and the beat lights are drawn from the same clock. Tap tempo takes the median gap between your last eight taps.

Compared with upload-based tools: Metronome apps want an install and often a subscription for odd time signatures or subdivisions, and metronome websites run ads and trackers that can make the page stutter. This one has every setting free, no ads, and keeps working offline after one visit and a short wait.

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

Does the click drift or stutter?

No. The clicks are scheduled a moment ahead on the sound card’s own clock (the Web Audio clock), not on page timers, so the beat stays steady even when the browser is busy. Changing the tempo while it plays keeps the next beat on time and carries on counting the bar.

How do I set a time signature like 6/8 or 7/8?

Set Beats per bar to the top number: 6 for 6/8, 7 for 7/8. For 6/8 many players prefer 2 beats per bar with Triplets, which gives the same six clicks with the stress on 1 and 4.

Will it keep running with the screen off or in another tab?

On a computer it usually keeps going in a background tab, because browsers do not slow down a page that is playing sound. On phones the browser may pause sound when the screen locks, so keep the screen on while you practise.

    Does it work offline?

Yes. After one visit and a short wait the page is stored by your browser, so the metronome opens and runs with no connection, in a practice room or on a plane.

    Is anything recorded?

No. The metronome only plays sound; it never uses the microphone. Nothing about your practice is stored or sent. To check a microphone before you record yourself playing along, use the mic test.
