Convert a US Letter PDF to A4

American Letter pages moved onto A4, scaled to fit, for printers and offices that expect A4.

Convert a US Letter PDF to A4 (210 × 297 mm) for printing or filing outside North America. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The size limit is your device’s memory, and phones hold less; give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, and then it works offline.

    Working…

    Done

Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.

Documents from the United States and Canada are usually US Letter: 8.5 × 11 inches, which is wider and shorter than A4. Print one on A4 paper and the printer either scales it on its own, or complains about a paper mismatch and waits. University submissions, European government forms and many offices ask for A4 specifically.

A worked example: a US publisher sends you a 40-page contract as a Letter PDF, and you need to print, sign and file it in Germany. Drop it here with A4 chosen. Letter is wider in proportion, so the width decides: each page shrinks to 97% (595.28 ÷ 612 points), and the extra height of A4 becomes a white band of about 13 mm at the top and bottom. All 40 pages are done in a second or two, and the signature fields still work if you sign on screen instead.

Mixed documents are handled page by page: a landscape spreadsheet page lands on landscape A4, and a portrait page on portrait A4.

    How it works

    1. Drop the Letter PDF; A4 is already chosen.
    2. Keep the orientation on “Same as each page” unless you need every page one way.
    3. Press Convert to A4 and print or file the result.

In your browser, not on a server

pdf-lib (MIT) opens the PDF in your tab. Each page gets the new paper size, turned to match the page as it is shown, and its existing content is wrapped in a single transform that scales it to fit inside the margin and centres it, with a clip at the old page edge. Nothing is redrawn or rasterised, so text, vector drawings and images are unchanged. Links, form fields and comments are moved and scaled by the same amount.

Compared with upload-based tools: Online resizers upload the PDF, and many rasterise the pages or cap free use. Here the document stays on your device, the text stays real text, and the limit is your device’s memory (phones hold less).

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

How much smaller is the content?

97% of its original size, since A4 is 6 mm narrower than Letter. It is hard to see on paper; a 12-point font prints at about 11.7 points.

Can I stretch it to fill A4 exactly?

No: stretching would distort text and pictures. The content keeps its proportions and the spare space is split evenly above and below.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Yes. A scanned page is an image on a page, and it is scaled the same way as text.

    Is the file uploaded anywhere?

No. There is no server in this process. The page is a static file and the work is done by code running inside your browser tab. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use; then you can turn off Wi-Fi and it still works.
