Crop a GIF

Crops an animated GIF to a box you draw, a square, 16:9 or 9:16, keeping every frame, its timing and the loop. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. No watermark.     How it works

    1. Drop a GIF, or tap to pick one. The first frame appears with a crop box.
    2. Drag the box into place and resize it from the corners, or pick a shape such as square, 16:9 or 9:16 and type exact pixels.
    3. Crop. The cropped GIF keeps its timing and looping and downloads from your browser.

    In your browser, not on a server

    Your browser draws the first frame of the GIF so you can place the box. gifuct-js (MIT) then reads the GIF byte by byte in your tab and every frame is composited the way browsers play it; the part inside the box is cut from each frame, and gifenc’s (MIT) colour quantizer and LZW coder write the frames back with their delays and the loop setting. The new GIF is assembled in memory.

    Compared with upload-based tools: Here the GIF is cropped in this tab: the file is not uploaded, there is no size cap beyond your device’s memory (phones hold less), and no watermark is added.

    Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

    Does cropping make the GIF shorter?

    No. Cropping removes parts of the picture, not parts of the time, so every frame is kept and the GIF lasts as long as before. To make a GIF play for less time, cut the video it came from with Trim video and make a new GIF with Video to GIF.

    How do I crop a GIF to a square?

    Pick Square (1:1) in the Shape list. The box becomes the largest square that fits, centred; drag it to the part you want, or change the Left and Top numbers. The result is as many pixels wide as it is tall, such as 400 by 400.

    Does cropping lower the picture quality?

    The pixels inside the box are copied as they are, with no resizing. A GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame and each frame is written again, so keep Keep all colours selected if you want the colours to stay as close as possible to the original.

    Can I crop a GIF into a circle?

    Not yet. A GIF has no soft edges: a pixel is either fully shown or fully see-through, so a circle would come out with jagged edges. Crop it to a square here, then use the shape your site or app offers.

    Can I crop on an iPhone?

    The page works in a mobile browser, and the crop box is built for touch: pick the GIF from Files or Photos, then drag the box with your finger. Drag the corners to resize it, or pick a shape and type exact numbers.

    Can I add text to a GIF?

    Yes. Add text to GIF draws a caption on every frame and keeps each frame’s timing and the loop. Crop first if you want the caption placed against the cropped edges.

    Is my GIF uploaded?

    No. The GIF is decoded and cropped by code running in this page, with no server in the process, and the limit is your device’s memory (phones hold less). The page keeps working offline after one visit and a short wait.
