Remove a person from a photo
Paint over a photobomber or a stranger in the background and the scene fills back in, privately.
- Nothing is uploaded
- Works offline after first use
- Open source
- No watermark · limit is your device’s memory; phones hold less
Take a photobomber, an ex or a crowd out of a picture: paint over them and an AI fills in the scene behind, right in your browser. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The first run downloads the object removal model (about 28 MB) and the WebAssembly engine that runs it to your browser, and after that the tool works offline.
Done
Open the network tab. Your files never appear in it.
Add files and run the tool to see every request this tab makes.
Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.
Holiday photos at famous places are full of other tourists, a perfect group shot has a stranger mid-blink behind it, and some pictures you want to keep have a person in them you would rather not see. Paint over the person, from head to feet and including the shadow they cast, press Erase, and the background they were covering is filled in.
The brush opens larger here, since people are big targets. Work in pieces for someone who fills a large part of the frame: erase the lower half, look, then the upper half. The model has more surrounding scene to learn from each time, and detail such as railings, horizon lines and paving joints carries through better.
These are photos of people, often children and family, and they should not go to a server to be edited. The network runs in this tab and the photo is never uploaded, so you can use it on the pictures you would not hand to an app.
How it works
- Drop the photo.
- Paint over the person and their shadow, then press Erase.
- Touch up any smudge with a second pass, then press Save.
In your browser, not on a server
Your browser decodes the photo and you paint the area to remove on a canvas. MI-GAN (MIT, Picsart AI Research), an inpainting network built to run on phones, runs in a web worker through onnxruntime-web (MIT) compiled to WebAssembly. The model crops around the painted area, fills it at 512 × 512 from the surrounding pixels and blends it back at full size; only painted pixels change. The result is saved by your browser’s own image encoder.
Compared with upload-based tools: Online magic erasers upload your photo to a GPU server, often cap the free size, add a watermark or ask for an account, and keep the upload. The photos people clean up are often personal: family, homes, holidays. Here the network runs on your device and the photo never leaves it.
Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after your first run to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.
Questions
The person is standing in front of someone I want to keep. Will that work?
Not well. The eraser fills in from what is around the painted area and cannot know what a hidden face or body looked like, so a person overlapping another comes back as a blend. It works best when the person to remove stands against scenery.
Should I include the shadow?
Yes. A shadow or reflection left on the ground is the first thing people notice. Paint over it along with the person, or erase it in a second pass.
Can I remove several people?
Yes. Erase them one at a time: each pass fills a smaller area with more detail than one big pass would, and Undo only takes back the last one if a pass goes wrong.
Is the file uploaded anywhere?
No. There is no server in this process. The page is a static file and the work is done by code running inside your browser tab. Give the page a short while after your first run to save itself for offline use; then you can turn off Wi-Fi and it still works.
