Make a UPC barcode
Type the 11 or 12 digits of your UPC-A number and the page draws the barcode with its check digit.
- Nothing is uploaded
- Works offline after first visit
- Open source
- No watermark, no sign-up
Draw a UPC-A barcode from your 11 or 12 digit number, with the check digit worked out for you. It is free, and what you type is not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The barcodes are drawn on this page, and after one visit and a short wait the page works offline.

A UPC-A barcode is the 12-digit bar pattern on most products sold in North America. The digits are a company number, an item number and one last check digit, and the bars are those digits written in a form a scanner can read. This page draws the bars from the number you give it.
You need the number first. This page cannot issue one, and a number you make up may already belong to another company’s product. Shops and online marketplaces normally ask for numbers licensed to your company through GS1. If you have your 11 digits, type them: the page works out the 12th, shows it to you, and draws the barcode.
If you have all 12 digits, type all 12. When the last digit does not fit the other eleven, the page says what it should be, instead of drawing a barcode that a shop’s system would reject.
What the 12 digits are
- Digit 1 is the number system digit. 0, 1, 6, 7, 8 and 9 start ordinary product numbers. 2 is reserved for a store’s own use, for items sold by weight; 3 is for drugs; 4 is reserved for a store’s own use, such as loyalty cards; 5 is for coupons.
- Digits 2 to 11 hold the company prefix and the item number. Companies get prefixes of different lengths, so where one ends and the other starts is not fixed.
- Digit 12 is the check digit.
How the check digit is worked out
- Add the digits in positions 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 and multiply the sum by 3. Add the digits in positions 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10. The check digit is what brings the total up to the next multiple of 10. For 01234567890 that is (0+2+4+6+8+0) × 3 = 60, plus (1+3+5+7+9) = 25, a total of 85, so the check digit is 5 and the number is 012345678905.
UPC-A and EAN-13
- A UPC-A number is an EAN-13 number with a 0 in front, so a scanner that reads EAN-13 reads UPC-A too. If a marketplace asks for an EAN-13, put a 0 before your 12 digits and use the EAN-13 barcode generator.
How it works
- Type your 11 digits, or all 12 if you already have the check digit. Spaces and hyphens are ignored.
- Look at the 12th digit the page shows. If you typed 12 digits and it disagrees with yours, the page tells you the right one.
- Save a PNG, SVG or PDF, then test-scan a printed copy.
In your browser, not on a server
JsBarcode (MIT), a small open-source library, turns your number or text into the pattern of bars in this page. The page first checks the number against the rules of the type you chose and works out the check digit itself. The PNG is painted on a canvas by your browser, the SVG is written as plain rectangles, and the PDF is made by pdf-lib (MIT) in the tab.
Compared with upload-based tools: The number you type may be an unreleased product or an internal asset ID. Here the barcode is drawn on your device, so the number never leaves it.
Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.
Questions
Can I just make up a UPC number?
You can draw a barcode from any 11 digits and a scanner will read it. But the number may match one that already belongs to another company’s product, so shops and marketplaces that look the number up can reject it or mix it up with theirs. For anything you sell outside your own premises, use numbers licensed to you.
What happens if my 12th digit is wrong?
The page does not draw the barcode. It shows the digit that the first eleven call for, so you can see whether you mistyped a digit or copied a number that was wrong to begin with.
What is the difference between UPC-A and UPC-E?
UPC-E is a short, 8-digit version for small packages. It is made by dropping zeros from certain UPC-A numbers, so not every UPC-A number has a short form. This page makes UPC-A; the barcode generator can also draw UPC-E.
Do UPC barcodes work outside North America?
Yes. Most retail scanners in other countries read UPC-A as an EAN-13 with a leading 0. Some marketplaces still ask for the 13-digit form in their listing forms, so check what yours expects.
Is what I type uploaded anywhere?
No. The barcode is drawn by code running in this page, so the number or text you type stays on your device. After your first visit and a short wait you can turn off your internet connection and it still works.
