Most people converting WebP to GIF have an animation: a sticker saved from WhatsApp or Telegram, a reaction clip from a website, a loop from Giphy or Tenor that downloaded as .webp instead of .gif. Many places still only play GIFs, including older chat apps, forum software, email signatures, slide decks and a lot of content management systems. Drop the WebP in one of those and you get a frozen first frame, or an upload error.
A lot of converters make the same mistake, because browsers only expose the first frame of an animated WebP to a web page. This one reads the WebP file itself: it walks the animation frame by frame, decodes each frame with your browser’s WebP decoder, lays it onto the canvas using the blend and disposal rules stored in the file, and writes each finished frame into the GIF with its original delay. The loop setting carries over too, so a forever-looping sticker still loops forever.
GIF is an old format with two limits worth knowing. Each frame holds at most 256 colours, so gradients and photographic clips can show some banding or speckle; flat stickers, emoji and cartoons look the same as the original. And GIF transparency is on or off per pixel, so soft, semi-transparent edges become hard ones. That is why a GIF is often two to five times larger than the WebP it came from.

In your browser, not on a server
Stayput first reads the opening bytes of each file, where every image format writes its signature, so it knows what the file really is whatever it is called. Your browser decodes JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF and SVG itself; TIFF goes through UTIF.js, HEIC through the libheif WebAssembly decoder, and JPEG XL (or AVIF, in a browser without native support) through the Squoosh decoders, all served from this site and cached. The browser re-encodes JPG, PNG and WebP; PDF, ICO, GIF, BMP and TIFF files are written by small encoders in the page. Nothing here needs a server.

Questions
Will my animated WebP stay animated?
Yes. Every frame is converted, with the same timing and loop count as the original. The result note shows how many frames went into the GIF.
Why is the GIF bigger than the WebP?
WebP compresses animation far better than GIF, which dates from 1987. A GIF of the same clip is usually two to five times the size. For long or large clips, check your destination’s size limit; many chat apps stop at 8 or 10 MB for GIFs.
The colours look slightly grainy. Can I fix that?
That is the 256-colour limit of GIF at work, and it shows mostly on gradients and filmed footage. Cartoon stickers and flat graphics come through cleanly. If the destination accepts WebP or MP4, keep the original instead.
What about a still WebP?
It becomes a single-frame GIF. For still images, PNG or JPG are usually better choices: [WebP to PNG](/webp-to-png) keeps full colour and transparency.
How do I save a WhatsApp or Telegram sticker as a WebP first?
On desktop, stickers are saved as .webp when you right-click and save them, or when you export the chat media. Drop that file here. Stickers in Telegram’s .tgs or .webm formats are a different kind of animation and are not supported.
Is anything uploaded?
