Edit a PDF

Mark up and rearrange a PDF in your browser. Add text, cover a spot, highlight, draw or drop in an image; rotate, delete or reorder pages. Your file never leaves this device.

Adds text, cover boxes, highlights, drawings and images on top of a PDF and lets you rotate, delete or reorder its pages, but it cannot change the text already in the file. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The size limit is your device’s memory, and phones hold less; give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, and then it works offline.

Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.

What this can and can’t do

This is an annotate-and-arrange editor: it puts new things on top of a page and changes which pages are in the file. It does not open up the text that is already there.

    Which tool for which job

    How it works

    1. Drop the PDF.
    2. Pick Text, Cover, Highlight, Draw or Image and click the page.
    3. Rotate, delete or reorder pages if you need to, then download the edited PDF.

In your browser, not on a server

pdf.js draws each page in your tab so you can see where to click. Your additions are drawn onto the original pages with pdf-lib: typed text with the standard PDF fonts as real text, boxes and pen strokes as vector shapes, images as pictures. Page changes copy the pages you kept into the new file in your order. Nothing already on the page is rewritten, which is why existing text cannot be changed.

Compared with upload-based tools: Online PDF editors upload the document, then keep text editing, extra downloads or a watermark behind an account or a plan. This one has no server: the marks you add are written on your device, and the file you download has none of ours.

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

Can I edit the existing text in a PDF here?

No. You can add new text, cover old text and draw, but the words already in the file stay as they are. Covering is not removal: use Redact PDF to take text out. To change the wording of a document, start from the source file; for a Word source, PDF to Word gives a starting point.

Is it really free? Is there a watermark or sign-up?

There is no account, no watermark and no page limit. The only limit is your device’s memory, and phones hold less than computers.

    Is my PDF uploaded?

No. pdf.js shows the pages and pdf-lib writes your changes, both inside this tab. Open your browser’s Network tab while you edit and you will see no file leave the page.

Can I edit a scanned PDF?

You can add text and cover boxes on top of a scan. To make the scanned text selectable, run OCR PDF first.

    Does covering text hide it?

Visually, yes. The text is still in the file and can be copied out. Use Redact PDF when it has to be gone.

How do I fill in a form or sign?

Use Fill PDF form for a form’s own fields and Sign PDF for a signature.

Can I edit a PDF on an iPhone, a Mac or in Chrome?

Yes, in the browser: there is no app to install, and drawing works with a finger. Safari on iPhone and Mac, Chrome and Firefox are all fine.

    Which page edits are supported?

Rotate a page a quarter turn at a time, delete pages and drag them into a new order. To join files or cut one apart, use Merge PDF or Split PDF.
