Convert GIF to animated PNG
Turn animated GIFs into animated PNG (APNG) files with their timing, looping and transparency. Converted on this device, never uploaded.
- Nothing is uploaded
- Works offline after first visit
- Open source
- No watermark · limit is your device’s memory; phones hold less
Converts animated GIFs to animated PNG (APNG), keeping every frame, its delay, the loop count and transparent areas, with full colour instead of the GIF’s 256. It is free, and your GIFs are not uploaded: each frame is decoded and written by your browser. The size limit is your device’s memory (phones hold less), and after one visit and a short wait the page works offline.

Open the network tab. Your files never appear in it.
Add files and run the tool to see every request this tab makes.
Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.
How it works
- Drop one or more animated GIFs, or tap to pick them.
- Convert. Each GIF is decoded and written as an animated PNG in your browser.
- Download the .png file, or a zip when you converted several.
In your browser, not on a server
Stayput reads the GIF byte by byte in your tab with gifuct-js (MIT), decompresses each frame and composites it the way browsers play GIFs, honouring disposal rules and transparency. Every finished picture is written as a full frame of an animated PNG: the PNG header, an animation control chunk with the frame count and the GIF’s loop setting, then each frame’s control chunk (its delay) and its pixels, deflated by your browser’s own CompressionStream. The file is assembled in memory.
Compared with upload-based tools: Online GIF to APNG converters upload the file to convert it on a server and may cap the size or keep a copy. Here the conversion runs on your device, so a private screen recording or a clip of your kids never leaves it, and the page keeps working offline after one visit and a short wait.
Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.
Questions
Is my GIF uploaded?
No. The GIF is decoded by code in this page and the animated PNG is written in your browser’s memory. There is no server in the process, and after one visit and a short wait the page works with Wi-Fi off.
Will the APNG be smaller than the GIF?
Not necessarily. An APNG stores full colour for every frame, and for flat-colour animation such as logos and pixel art it is often larger than the GIF. Convert for the quality and the smooth transparency, not for the size. If size is the goal, GIF to WebP or GIF to MP4 is usually far smaller.
Does it keep the timing, the looping and the transparency?
Yes. Each frame keeps its own delay, the loop count from the GIF is written into the file (a GIF with no loop setting plays once), and see-through areas stay see-through, with soft edges where the GIF had hard ones. Frames with a delay of 0 or 1 hundredths of a second are given a tenth of a second, which is what every browser does with them too.
Where does an APNG play?
In Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and in many image viewers and editors. Some chat apps, social sites and upload forms flatten an APNG to its first frame, or refuse it, and some only accept GIF. Check where you will use it; the file is a normal .png, so a program that does not know APNG shows the first frame.
Why is it a .png file and not .apng?
An APNG is a PNG with extra animation chunks, so the usual extension is .png and programs that do not understand animation still open it as a still picture. The file you get is named after your GIF with .png.
