Convert GIF to APNG
Make an animated PNG from a GIF, with its timing, looping and transparency, on your own device.
- Nothing is uploaded
- Works offline after first visit
- Open source
- No watermark · limit is your device’s memory; phones hold less
Convert a GIF to APNG, an animated PNG, in your browser. Each frame keeps its delay, the loop count and transparency. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The size limit is your device’s memory, and phones hold less; give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, and then it works offline.

APNG is an animated PNG: the same .png file extension, with extra chunks that tell a browser to play several frames. Unlike a GIF it holds full 24-bit colour and a proper 8-bit alpha channel, so gradients, shadows and soft edges stay smooth instead of dithering into 256 colours.
Drop a GIF and every frame is decoded, composited the way browsers play it, and written back as an APNG frame with its own delay. The loop count from the GIF is kept (a GIF with no loop setting plays once), and transparent areas stay transparent. Your browser does all of it; the GIF is not uploaded and there is no watermark.
Know what you are getting: an APNG is often larger than the GIF, especially for flat-colour animation, because every frame is stored whole. It plays in Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox, but some chat apps, social sites and upload forms flatten it to its first frame or only accept GIF. Test it where you plan to use it.
How it works
- Drop one or more animated GIFs, or tap to pick them.
- Convert. Each one becomes an animated PNG in your browser.
- Download the .png, or a zip when you converted several.
In your browser, not on a server
Stayput reads the GIF byte by byte in your tab with gifuct-js (MIT), decompresses each frame and composites it the way browsers play GIFs, honouring disposal rules and transparency. Every finished picture is written as a full frame of an animated PNG: the PNG header, an animation control chunk with the frame count and the GIF’s loop setting, then each frame’s control chunk (its delay) and its pixels, deflated by your browser’s own CompressionStream. The file is assembled in memory.
Compared with upload-based tools: Online GIF to APNG converters upload the file to convert it on a server and may cap the size or keep a copy. Here the conversion runs on your device, so a private screen recording or a clip of your kids never leaves it, and the page keeps working offline after one visit and a short wait.
Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.
Questions
Will the APNG be smaller than the GIF?
Often not. Every frame is stored whole in full colour, so flat-colour animation usually comes out larger. For a smaller file, try GIF to MP4 or Compress GIF.
Where does an APNG play?
In Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox. Some chat apps and social sites show only the first frame or reject the file, so check the place you will post it. If one rejects it, APNG to GIF turns it back into a GIF.
Is the file uploaded?
No. It is decoded and written in your browser tab, and the page works offline after one visit.
Is there a smaller animated format?
Yes. GIF to WebP writes an animated WebP, usually a fraction of the size of the GIF or the APNG, and plays in current browsers.
Is the file uploaded anywhere?
No. There is no server in this process. The page is a static file and the work is done by code running inside your browser tab. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use; then you can turn off Wi-Fi and it still works.
