Make an ISBN barcode

Type the ISBN as printed, with or without hyphens, and get the barcode for the back cover.

Turn an ISBN-10 or ISBN-13 into the EAN-13 barcode printed on a book cover. It is free, and what you type is not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The barcodes are drawn on this page, and after one visit and a short wait the page works offline.

    Working…

    Done

Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.

The barcode on a book’s back cover is its ISBN-13 written as an EAN-13: the 13 digits of the ISBN, which start with 978 or 979, drawn as bars. The bars add nothing to the number. They are the same digits in a form a shop till or a warehouse scanner can read.

Type the ISBN with or without hyphens or spaces. If you have an older 10-digit ISBN, the page converts it to the 13-digit form and tells you the number it used, so you can check it against the one on your copyright page.

The ISBN itself comes from your country’s ISBN agency or from the publishing service that issued it. This page draws the barcode for a number you already have; it does not issue numbers.

    How it works

    1. Type the ISBN-13 or ISBN-10. Hyphens and spaces are ignored, and an X at the end of an ISBN-10 is fine.
    2. Check the 13-digit number the page shows under the barcode.
    3. Save a PNG, SVG or PDF for the cover file, and place it with a clear margin around it.

In your browser, not on a server

JsBarcode (MIT), a small open-source library, turns your number or text into the pattern of bars in this page. The page first checks the number against the rules of the type you chose and works out the check digit itself. The PNG is painted on a canvas by your browser, the SVG is written as plain rectangles, and the PDF is made by pdf-lib (MIT) in the tab.

Compared with upload-based tools: The number you type may be an unreleased product or an internal asset ID. Here the barcode is drawn on your device, so the number never leaves it.

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

Is an ISBN barcode different from an EAN?

It is an EAN-13 whose digits happen to be the ISBN. Any scanner that reads EAN-13 reads it, and the EAN-13 barcode generator makes the same image from the same 13 digits.

Why did the digits change from my ISBN-10?

The 13-digit ISBN is the ISBN-10 with 978 in front and a new last digit. ISBNs have had 13 digits since 1 January 2007, so a book published before that may show only the 10-digit form.

Does the barcode contain the price?

No. The main barcode holds the ISBN only. Prices, where they are printed in bars at all, go in a separate 5-digit add-on that this page does not draw.

The page says my number is not an ISBN. What is wrong?

ISBN-13s start with 978 or 979, and an ISBN-10 has 10 characters (digits, and X as the last one). A 13-digit number that starts differently is an ordinary product number; use the EAN-13 barcode generator for it.

Is what I type uploaded anywhere?

No. The barcode is drawn by code running in this page, so the number or text you type stays on your device. After your first visit and a short wait you can turn off your internet connection and it still works.
