Make an ITF-14 barcode

The carton barcode: 14 digits, with the check digit added for you and bearer bars if you want them.

Make an ITF-14 barcode for shipping cartons from a 13 or 14 digit GTIN, with the check digit added. It is free, and what you type is not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The barcodes are drawn on this page, and after one visit and a short wait the page works offline.

ITF-14 is the barcode printed on the outer carton or case that holds several retail items. It carries a 14-digit GTIN-14: one packaging indicator digit, the first 12 digits of the item’s own number, and a new check digit.

It is built to print well on rough corrugated board, which is why the bars are wide, and it is printed with thick bearer bars, a frame around the barcode. The page draws the frame by default, and you can untick it.

Type 13 digits and the page adds the 14th, or type all 14 and it checks the last one.

Making a carton number from an item number

    Why 14 digits

    How it works

    1. Type 13 digits, or all 14. Spaces and hyphens are ignored.
    2. Leave Bearer bars ticked for the frame, unless your customer’s labelling guide says otherwise.
    3. Save a PNG, SVG or PDF and test-scan a printed copy on the board you will print on.

In your browser, not on a server

JsBarcode (MIT), a small open-source library, turns your number or text into the pattern of bars in this page. The page first checks the number against the rules of the type you chose and works out the check digit itself. The PNG is painted on a canvas by your browser, the SVG is written as plain rectangles, and the PDF is made by pdf-lib (MIT) in the tab.

Compared with upload-based tools: The number you type may be an unreleased product or an internal asset ID. Here the barcode is drawn on your device, so the number never leaves it.

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

Can I put an ITF-14 on the single item?

It is meant for cartons and cases, not for items scanned at a shop’s till. Use an EAN-13 or UPC-A for the item itself.

Does a case need its own number?

A case is a different trade item from the units inside it, so it normally gets its own GTIN-14, made from the item’s number as shown above. Your GS1 member service or your customer’s guide has the rules for your products.

    What are bearer bars?

The thick frame around the barcode. GS1’s guidance for ITF-14 asks for it, because a carton barcode without one risks being misread. This page draws a full frame while the box is ticked, and it is ticked by default. On the printed label GS1 asks for a frame 4.8 mm thick; a PNG or SVG has no fixed physical size, so download the SVG and set its size when you print so the frame comes out at 4.8 mm.

Why does the page refuse a number with 12 digits?

An ITF-14 needs 13 digits plus the check digit. A 12-digit UPC-A needs a 0 in front, and then the packaging indicator digit, before it makes a carton number.

Is what I type uploaded anywhere?

No. The barcode is drawn by code running in this page, so the number or text you type stays on your device. After your first visit and a short wait you can turn off your internet connection and it still works.
