Make an EAN-13 barcode

Type 12 digits and the page adds the 13th, or type all 13 and it checks the last one.

Draw an EAN-13 barcode from 12 or 13 digits, with the check digit worked out for you. It is free, and what you type is not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The barcodes are drawn on this page, and after one visit and a short wait the page works offline.

EAN-13 is the 13-digit barcode on products sold in most of the world, and the form that many shops and marketplaces outside North America ask for. It carries a GTIN-13: a GS1 prefix, the company number, an item number and a check digit.

The first two or three digits are the GS1 prefix. It says which GS1 office issued the number range, not where the product was made, so a number that starts with 5 does not mean the product comes from any particular country.

Type 12 digits and the page adds the 13th. Type all 13 and it confirms that the last one fits the rest. Either way you see the digit it used, and what gets drawn is a number a scanner can verify.

    How it works

    1. Type 12 digits, or all 13. Spaces and hyphens are ignored.
    2. Read the last digit the page shows. If you typed 13 digits and it does not fit, the page tells you which digit it should be.
    3. Save a PNG, SVG or PDF and test-scan a printed copy.

In your browser, not on a server

JsBarcode (MIT), a small open-source library, turns your number or text into the pattern of bars in this page. The page first checks the number against the rules of the type you chose and works out the check digit itself. The PNG is painted on a canvas by your browser, the SVG is written as plain rectangles, and the PDF is made by pdf-lib (MIT) in the tab.

Compared with upload-based tools: The number you type may be an unreleased product or an internal asset ID. Here the barcode is drawn on your device, so the number never leaves it.

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

Does the first digit tell you the country of a product?

No. The first digits are a GS1 prefix that shows which GS1 office issued the company’s number range. A company can make its products anywhere, so the prefix is not a country of origin.

What is the difference between EAN-13 and UPC-A?

They are one system at two lengths. EAN-13 has 13 digits and UPC-A has 12, and a UPC-A number becomes an EAN-13 when a 0 is put in front. Listings and scanners outside North America usually expect the 13-digit form.

Why does the page reject my 13-digit number?

The last digit is a check digit, and for your number it does not fit the other twelve. The page shows the digit it should be. That usually means one digit was mistyped or the number was copied wrongly from a spreadsheet.

Can it draw the small add-on barcode beside a magazine or book?

No. That extra bar pattern (an EAN-2 or EAN-5 add-on) is a separate symbol, and this page draws the main EAN-13 only.

Is what I type uploaded anywhere?

No. The barcode is drawn by code running in this page, so the number or text you type stays on your device. After your first visit and a short wait you can turn off your internet connection and it still works.
