Make a barcode

Type a number or text, pick the barcode type, and save the barcode as an image or a PDF. It is drawn on this page.

Makes a Code 128, Code 39, UPC-A, EAN-13, ITF-14 or other barcode from the number or text you type, and saves it as PNG, SVG or PDF. It is free, and what you type is not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The barcodes are drawn on this page, and after one visit and a short wait the page works offline.

    Which barcode type to choose

What this page does not do

    How it works

    1. Choose the barcode type. Code 128 takes any text; UPC-A, EAN-13, EAN-8 and ITF-14 take digits only, and the page adds the last (check) digit if you leave it out.
    2. Type the number or text. The barcode redraws as you type, and a message tells you at once if a character or the length is not allowed for that type.
    3. Set the bar width, height and colours if you need to, then save a PNG, an SVG or a PDF. Test-scan a printed copy with a barcode scanner before you print a run.

In your browser, not on a server

JsBarcode (MIT), a small open-source library, turns your number or text into the pattern of bars in this page. The page first checks the number against the rules of the type you chose and works out the check digit itself. The PNG is painted on a canvas by your browser, the SVG is written as plain rectangles, and the PDF is made by pdf-lib (MIT) in the tab.

Compared with upload-based tools: The number you type may be an unreleased product or an internal asset ID. Here the barcode is drawn on your device, so the number never leaves it.

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

Which barcode type should I choose?

It depends on who will scan it. Products sold in shops use UPC-A (North America) or EAN-13 (most other countries), and cartons use ITF-14. For your own labels, shelves, inventory and shipping, Code 128 is a common choice because it holds any text and stays compact; Code 39 is the older option some systems still ask for. If a customer, shop or marketplace named a type, use that one.

Can I make a barcode for a product I want to sell in shops?

This page draws the barcode, but it cannot give you the number. Shops and marketplaces generally expect product numbers (GTINs) issued to your company by GS1, and a number you invent may already belong to someone else’s product. Get your number first, type it in here, and the page adds the check digit and draws the barcode.

What is the check digit, and does the page add it?

The last digit of UPC-A, EAN-13, EAN-8 and ITF-14 is a check digit, worked out from the other digits so a scanner can tell when it misread. If you type the number without it (11, 12, 7 or 13 digits), the page adds it and shows you which digit it added. If you type the full number and the last digit is wrong, the page tells you what it should be instead of drawing a barcode a shop’s system would reject.

    PNG, SVG or PDF?

PNG for documents, slides and web pages. SVG for print and design tools: the bars are exact rectangles, so they stay sharp at any size. PDF when you want a single file to send to a printer or open in any PDF reader; it holds the PNG image on a page the size of the image.

How big should I print it?

Bar width and height here are in pixels on screen. In print, what matters is the width of the narrowest bar, so save the SVG, scale it in your layout program, and keep the blank space (the quiet zone) left and right of the bars. Shops, carriers and warehouses often publish the size range they accept; follow theirs, then scan a printed copy before you print a whole sheet.

Why does the page say my text is not allowed?

Each type has its own alphabet. UPC, EAN and ITF are digits only. Code 39 takes capital letters, digits, space and - . $ / + %, and the page turns lowercase letters into capitals. Code 128 here takes the characters on a standard keyboard, which covers letters, digits and punctuation but not accented letters or emoji.

Does it make QR codes too?

No. A QR code is a different, two-dimensional type. Use the QR code generator for a link, Wi-Fi network or contact card.

Is what I type uploaded anywhere?

No. The barcode is drawn by code running in this page, so the number or text you type stays on your device. After your first visit and a short wait you can turn off your internet connection and it still works.
