Scan a QR code on your computer

Use your webcam, or paste a screenshot. There is nothing to install.

Scan a QR code on a computer with your webcam, or from a screenshot you paste. It is free, and your images and the picture from your camera are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. Your browser asks for camera permission only if you press the camera button, and after your first run the page works offline.

Drop an image or paste a screenshotor click to choose files. Batches welcome.
Scan with your cameraYour browser asks to use the camera when you press the button. The picture stays in this tab and is not uploaded.

    Working…

    Done

Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.

A computer has no camera app that reads QR codes the way a phone does. This page does it in the browser: with your webcam, or from a screenshot of a code that is already on your screen. There is no program or extension to install.

Neither the webcam picture nor the screenshot is uploaded. A link in a code is shown in full, and opened only when you press the button.

    How it works

    1. For a code on your screen, take a screenshot: Windows, Win+Shift+S; Mac, Cmd+Ctrl+Shift+4; Chromebook, Ctrl+Shift+Show windows. Then paste it here with Ctrl+V or Cmd+V.
    2. For a code on paper or on a phone, press Scan with camera, allow the camera when your browser asks, and hold the code in front of the webcam, about 15 to 30 cm away.
    3. Read the card, copy the text, and press Open link only for a link you trust.

In your browser, not on a server

ZXing-C++ (Apache-2.0), a widely used open-source barcode reader compiled to WebAssembly, finds and reads the code on this page. The reader is a 0.9 MB file served from this site, so it is fetched on your first scan and then kept in your browser. Camera pictures are read frame by frame in memory and are never saved.

Compared with upload-based tools: A scanner that reads the picture on a server has to receive it first, and a Wi-Fi password or a ticket code travels with it. Here the picture is read on your device.

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after your first run to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

How do I scan a QR code on my laptop?

Press Scan with camera and hold the code in front of the webcam. Or, if the code is on your screen, take a screenshot and paste it here. The page shows what the code holds.

Does it work on Windows, Mac and Chromebook?

Yes, in a recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. It needs no app, no extension and no account.

Why does my webcam read the code slowly or not at all?

Webcams are lower quality than phone cameras and focus closer. Hold the code flat, 15 to 30 cm away, with light on it and no glare. If it still fails, show the code on a bigger screen or paste a screenshot.

Is the webcam picture saved or uploaded?

No. Frames are read in memory on your device and discarded. The camera turns off as soon as a code is read, when you press Stop, or when you leave the tab.
