Add a border to an image

A clean frame and rounded corners for photos, screenshots and product shots, made on this device.

Puts a white, black or coloured border around a picture and can round its corners, from a subtle frame to a circle. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The size limit is your device’s memory, and phones hold less; give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, and then it works offline.

    Working…

    Done

Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.

    How it works

    1. Drop one or more pictures.
    2. Set the border width and colour, and round the corners if you like; the preview shows the first picture.
    3. Press Add the border and download the framed pictures.

In your browser, not on a server

Your browser decodes each picture (libheif or the Squoosh decoders step in for HEIC, AVIF and JPEG XL). A new canvas is made larger by the border on each side, clipped to a rounded rectangle, filled with the border colour, clipped again to the inner rounded rectangle and the picture drawn inside at full size. The canvas is saved as PNG, JPG or WebP by your browser.

Compared with upload-based tools: Online frame and border tools upload your picture to add a few pixels around it, and many show ads or add a watermark. Here the picture stays on your device.

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after one visit to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

How is the border width measured?

As a share of the picture’s shorter side, added on every edge, so a batch of different sizes gets frames that look the same. 3 to 5% is a gallery-style mat; 10% or more is a thick polaroid-like frame.

Why is my rounded image a PNG?

The corners outside the curve need to be transparent so the picture sits cleanly on any background. JPG cannot store transparency, so with rounded corners the automatic setting saves PNG. Choose JPG to put the corners on white instead.

    Can I make a circle?

Set rounded corners to 50%. A square picture becomes a circle and a rectangle becomes a pill shape. For a circular profile picture cropped to the face, the crop tool’s circle shape is quicker.

Does it change the picture itself?

No. The picture is drawn at full size inside the frame; only the new border and corners are added. The output is larger by the border on each side.

    Are my pictures uploaded?

No. The frame is drawn on a canvas in your browser tab and saved from there. Your files are not uploaded.
