Make a profile picture

A clean headshot on a colour of your choice, framed around your face, made on this device.

Turns a photo into a profile picture, with the background removed and your face centred on a colour, as a circle or square at 1024 px. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark, and your files are not uploaded: everything runs in your browser on your device. The first run downloads the face finder, the cut-out model and the WebAssembly engines that run them (about 46 MB in all) to your browser, and after that the tool works offline.

Saved at 1024 × 1024, which every site scales down cleanly. The first photo downloads the face finder, the cut-out model and their WebAssembly runtime once (about 46 MB in all).

    Working…

    Done

Your files are processed on this device and never sent to a server. Reload the page to clear everything from memory.

    How it works

    1. Drop a photo where your face is clear and well lit; a selfie works.
    2. Pick a background colour and a circle or square.
    3. Download the 1024 × 1024 picture and upload it to LinkedIn, Slack, Discord, Instagram or anywhere else.

In your browser, not on a server

Two open models run in your tab: MediaPipe’s BlazeFace (Apache 2.0) finds your face and eyes, and ISNet on onnxruntime-web cuts you out of the photo. The cut-out is scaled and placed so the face sits in the standard headshot position, over a solid colour, clipped to a circle if you choose, and saved at 1024 × 1024 by your browser.

Compared with upload-based tools: Profile picture and AI headshot apps upload your face, often keep it to train models, and charge for the full-size file. Here your photo is processed on your device, and the result is yours at full size with no watermark.

Verify it yourself. Give the page a short while after your first run to save itself for offline use, then turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and run the tool again. Or open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Cmd-Option-I on a Mac), pick the Network tab, and watch it while you convert. The panel above does the same count for you.

    Questions

    Is my photo uploaded?

No. A face detector and a cut-out model run inside your browser tab, and the picture is drawn there. Your face does not go to a server, which is more than most avatar and headshot apps can say.

    How is the picture framed?

Around your face: the face fills about 40% of the width with the eyes a little above the middle, the usual headshot framing that still looks right when a site crops it to a circle. If no face is found, for a pet or an object, the whole subject is fitted in instead.

Can I use a photo from my webcam?

Yes, as a photo file. Check your framing and light first with the webcam test, save a snapshot as JPG, then drop it here.

    Which background colour works best?

A colour that contrasts with your hair and clothes and stays recognisable at thumbnail size. Soft, light colours read as professional on LinkedIn; bright ones stand out in Slack and Discord member lists. Using the same colour everywhere makes you easier to spot.

    Why 1024 × 1024?

It is larger than any site displays, so every site can scale it down sharply: LinkedIn shows 400 × 400, Slack and Discord show much smaller. Uploading a bigger square than needed avoids the blur you get when a site enlarges a small one.

Should I choose circle or square?

Most sites crop to a circle themselves, so a square with a colour background works everywhere. Choose Circle when the picture will be shown as-is on a page, in a slide or an email signature, where a square would look boxy; the corners are transparent, so it is saved as PNG.

My hair looks cut off at the edges.

Fine, flyaway hair against a busy background is the hardest case for the cut-out. A photo against a plain wall works best. You can also run the photo through the background remover first, adjusting Keep around the edges, and drop the PNG it gives you here.
